A festival to showcase traditional and cultural food was organised by local grassroots leaders at Pusat Insani, Seria over the weekend.
The Penghulu Mukim, Village Heads and Heads of Longhouses Association (PEKERUPA) in the Belait District hosted the festival featuring various traditional cakes, fruits and cuisines.
Legislative Council (legCo) member Yang Berhormat Haji Mohd Salleh bin Haji Othman said the festival was an opportunity to learn more about the nation’s cultural heritage.
“The festival also aims to preserve the unique culture of traditional food, while allowing those who are tasting it for the first time to have newfound appreciation for the food and cuisines,” he said.
Some 160 local fruits, kuih, dishes and cuisines were prepared by mukim and village consultative council members from the district.
Dishes that were featured included popular fare as well as more exotic and rural renditions of local cuisine.
On the sidelines of the festival, local entrepreneurs set up booths, and 10 stalls featuring products from the One Village One Product (1K1P) initiative. A number of cultural performances were also held alongside the festival, including gulingtangan and silat.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (Laws, International and Research) at the Ministry of Home Affairs Haji Ahmad Nizam bin Dato Paduka Haji Ismail was the guest of honour.
Also present were LegCo member Yang Berhormat Mohammad bin Abdullah @ Lim Swee Ann and Acting Belait District Officer Haji Amirol Hafidzin bin Haji Muhammad. – Daniel Lim
