Fasting a shield against hellfire

Religious authorities called on Muslims to refrain from acts that can invalidate their fast during Ramadhan as well as bad or useless acts.

Imams in the Friday sermon said fasting is a shield from the torments of hellfire and a fortress protecting Muslims from committing sinful acts.

“The holy month of Ramadhan is eagerly-awaited by Muslims as it is full of benefits.

Multiple rewards await those performing pious acts. Hence, it is a fortune for those who take advantage of it and a great loss for those who waste it,” imams said. “Fasting is not only the time to control lust, but also to protect ourselves from those that can taint our fasting and reduce the rewards.”

Imams highlighted some of the etiquette needed to be observed while fasting. “One should guard the tongue from backbiting or quarrelling, lying, making slanderous remarks and defaming others,” imams said.

“One should also lower one’s gaze and refrain from committing forbidden acts that prevent us from remembering Allah the Almighty.”

Imams also advised the ummah to refrain from deeds that may lessen rewards reaped from fasting. – Azlan Othman
