Familiarisation trip showcases Brunei as a golf destination

The Tourism Development Department hosted a familiarisation trip from February 23 to 28 for 10 top golf travel agents from Hong Kong, Thailand, Taipei and Singapore as part of efforts to position Brunei as a premier golf destination in Southeast Asia.

Tourism statistics indicate a significant rise in visitors from these regions, with numbers increasing from 20,801 to 43,274 by December 2024, compared to the previous year.

This growth presents an opportunity to attract niche golfing markets and further develop the sector. Conducted in collaboration with key tourism stakeholders, including the national airline, travel agencies and accommodation providers, the trip featured site visits to The Empire Golf and Country Club, the Royal Brunei Golf and Country Club, the Royal Brunei Airlines Golf Club and Pantai Mentiri Golf Club.

A highlight of the trip was a mini tournament, where participants played an 18-hole round alongside local players, offering an immersive experience of Brunei’s exceptional golfing landscape.

Beyond golf, the agents explored Brunei’s cultural and natural attractions through a guided city tour, which included visits to Kampong Ayer, a mangrove tour with proboscis monkey sightings, and stops at Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque and Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah.

They also had the opportunity to experience traditional Bruneian cuisine at local restaurants.

Looking ahead, the Tourism Development Department has outlined plans for 2025 to further engage these markets through increased participation in international expos, specialised familiarisation trips, and enhanced digital marketing strategies.

By targeting key international markets with niche tourism offerings, the department aims to showcase Brunei Darussalam’s diverse attractions and strengthen its position in the global travel industry. – James Kon
