I ordered takeaways from a restaurant in Kiulap recently when to my surprise, I was charged 20 cents for each plastic bag given.
I thought the incident was a one-off, chalking it up to a new policy of that specific restaurant to recover from the losses incurred during the pandemic.
I was wrong.
A few days ago, I was at the Jerudong Wet Market, and a vendor also charged me 20 cents per plastic bag. He explained that he didn’t have a choice because of the price increase in plastic bags in the country.
At this rate, it’s just a matter of time before all businesses – big or small – start following in the footsteps of those who have been charging people for a while.
A trip to Gadong Night Market would no longer work for the budget-conscious, as every cucur pisang or kueh could be 20 cents more expensive because of the plastic bags they come in.
