Experts to gather for rehabilitation medicine symposium

Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) will hold the Brunei Rehabilitation Medicine Symposium today to bring together prominent rehabilitation specialists from Southeast Asia to discuss key topics in the field of rehabilitation medicine.

An overview of the symposium’s agenda, focusing on advancing rehabilitation care in Brunei and the region, and the introduction of the symposium speakers were highlighted to the media on Friday.

Dr Abang Haji Muhd Fahmy bin Abang Haji Hepnie, chairperson of the symposium, head of the Rehabilitation Department and consultant in rehabilitation medicine at the Brunei Neuroscience Stroke and Rehabilitation Centre (BNSRC), PJSC, said seven experts from Southeast Asia will speak on rehabilitation and participate in a panel discussion.

Other panellists include Professor Dato’ Dr Zaliha Omar, member of the ASEAN Rehabilitation Medicine Association (ARMA) and Honorary Professor from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Malaya Medical Centre, Malaysia; and Professor Jerico Santiago Dela Cruz, Chairperson of the ARMA and from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Philippines General Hospital College of Medicine, University of the Philippines.

The panel shared the importance of the symposium in driving rehabilitation medicine forward in Brunei with a focus on critical topics such as cerebral palsy, post-spinal cord injury management, and myofascial pain syndrome, the symposium is set to enhance regional collaboration and build capacity in rehabilitation care across ASEAN member countries.

The symposium includes panel discussions from Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand, who will share insights on rehabilitation practices and innovations. – Azlan Othman
