British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Alexandra McKenzie expressed that the United Kingdom (UK) is committed to strengthening cooperation with Brunei in areas such as education, security and climate change.
She said, “UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy outlined five clear priorities, three of which are important for Brunei: growth, security and climate. He is eager to reconnect with the world. After some challenging years in partnerships, he wants to ensure that the UK engages with its partners with respect and openness.”
In an interview she said, she also looks forward to Brunei ratifying the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, which would establish a free trade agreement between the two nations.
In terms of security, she said, “We are grateful to the Sultanate for hosting the British Garrison, which is vital for our relationship and regional security. We want to ensure this continues and not take it for granted. There’s much we can do together, and we have a maritime dialogue planned to discuss our cooperation.” Regarding climate and nature, she recalled the launch of the Brunei Green Economy Framework in April, aiming to protect Brunei’s natural environment.
She added, “We are fortunate to have a long-standing relationship between Brunei and the UK, strengthened by both royal families.
“We appreciate that many Bruneians choose to study in the UK, which fosters mutual understanding. We are also exploring cooperation in justice, legal matters and cultural exchange.
McKenzie who arrived in August 2024 is excited to be in Brunei. She said she loves nature, describing Brunei as a beautiful country.
She also enjoys ambuyat, especially the spicy bit.
The envoy also brought a cat along with her to Brunei.
