The Environment Week: Road Towards a Sustainable Environment #BeTheSolution came to a close with the planting of 120 saplings including Tabebuia Aurea and Tabebuia Rosea at Muara Beach yesterday.
Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) contributed the saplings.
Permanent Secretary (Planning, Land Use and Environment) at the Ministry of Development (MoD) Dr Nor Imtihan binti Haji Abdul Razak joined the participants in the tree planting and beach clean-up event organised as part of the Environment Week in conjunction with the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2023 (Brunei MYCE 2023) and in observing the 50th anniversary of the World Environment Day celebration.
Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation (JASTRe) Director as Chair of the Environment Week working committee Hajah Martinah binti Haji Tamit, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Construction Industry and Development) at the MoD Sr Hajah Norhayati binti Haji Mohd Yaakub, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Corporate and Law) at the MoD Aldila binti Haji Mohamad Salleh, BSP Managing Director and Shell Country Chair in Brunei Darussalam Agnete Johnsgaard-Lewis, BIBD Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Junaidi bin Haji Masri and officials also attended.
The tree planting activity was part of the government’s efforts towards achieving Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy’s target of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035, in paving the Sultanate’s way towards a low carbon, climate-resilient and sustainable nation.
The event continued with a beach clean-up along the coastline in contributing to the nationwide cleaning campaign (for marine debris – Coastal Marvel) launched on June 5, 2021 under the Main Committee on Cleanliness Issues. Some 137 kilogrammes (kg) of waste was collected by nearly 100 participants with 70kg comprising plastic waste.
