Ensuing safety of lifting equipment, lifts

The Safety, Health, and Environment National Authority (SHENA) organised an outreach programme on the legal framework for lifting equipment and the safe use of lifts at the Main Auditorium, Level 1, Design & Technology (D&T) Building on Tuesday.

The programme aimed to raise awareness among key stakeholders about the importance of complying with relevant legislation and safety standards related to lifting equipment and the safe use of lifts at the workplace as poor installations or use of faulty lifts can lead to danger and serious risks due to lack of structural integrity or inoperable that could lead to death. This initiative was prompted by two work-related fatalities involving the use of makeshift or homemade cargo lifts in 2020 and 2024.

The outreach also sought to foster collaboration between Government agencies, lift service contractors, lifting companies, building owners, and other relevant stakeholders to promote workplace safety and health. In attendance during the event included representatives from Government and Statutory Bodies such as ABCi, DME JKR, BAPEQS, JPD, MPABD, lift service contractors registered under ABCi, lifting companies, private companies involved in lifting operations (construction, oil and gas, automotive sectors), building owners, representatives from supermarkets and department stores, and SHENA-registered Authorised Examiners and Third-Party Inspection Agencies.

During the programme, SHENA emphasised the importance of adhering to legal frameworks and safety standards to ensure the safe operation of lifting equipment and prevent accidents.

Overall, the programme featured presentations from experts, including SHENA representatives and invited presenters, who amongst others, provided valuable insights into the legal framework, safety requirements, and case studies as well as explanations related to lifting equipment.
