The Timor-Leste Embassy in Brunei Darussalam held a special event commemorating International Women’s Day at Laksamana College of Business yesterday, bringing together influential women to celebrate empowerment, culture and creativity.
The event titled ‘Open Hearts, Open House’ kicked off with an open exhibition and artisan market, showcasing the works of local and international artists.
The afternoon session saw a reception attended by Timor-Leste Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Abel Gueterres.
Ophthalmic surgeon at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital Dr Helena Hurairah delivered a speech highlighting the importance of women’s healthcare.
Former First Lady of Timor-Leste and founder of the Alola Foundation Dr Kirsty Sword Gusmão shared insights on women’s empowerment in a live video message, while Director of STAT Tours and Travel Auxiliadora Patricia Henrique also delivered a speech. The reception featured a textile showcase by Alola Foundation Chief Executive Officer Maria Imaculada Guterres and Women’s Economic Empowerment Manager Ilda Maria Da Cruz.
The event continued with a cake-cutting ceremony baked by Datin Hajah Faridah Hanim Haji Mohd Yussof, and performances. Participants engaged in an acrylic and watercolour workshop led by Joanna Lim @Tiara. The event culminated in a panel discussion on ‘Accelerating Action for Women Empowerment’ moderated by President of the Brunei Youth Council Khairunnisa Ash’ari. The panel featured Canada High Commissioner to Brunei Ambra Dickie, Maria Imaculada Guterres, Liyana Hanif and Lailatul Zubaidah. – Fadley Faisal
