His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Chancellor of Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) has consented to the establishment of the Professional Development Unit at UNISSA, which will play an important role in enhancing the competence and quality of human resources at the university.

In delivering a titah during the 11th Hafl Al-Takharruj (convocation ceremony) of UNISSA at the International Convention Centre in Berakas yesterday, His Majesty emphasised on the empowerment of balanced education to shape the nation’s identity.

“In this regard, I am pleased to know that UNISSA is very active in offering lifelong learning programmes to public and private servants as well as the public. Such programmes are indeed commendable and even need to be continued, not only by UNISSA, but also other institutions of higher learning by offering new programmes relevant to current needs,” His Majesty said.

His Majesty also highlighted the importance in making the effort to complement and develop professional knowledge skills among teaching and non-teachings staff, conducted in a continuous manner with results that shows improvement in the quality and effectiveness of the university’s management.

Earlier, His Majesty, in addressing the graduates reminded them that a degree received does not signal the end of acquiring knowledge, and should instead be a motivator or instigator towards a further direction.

“With increased knowledge, the dignity of a nation can be elevated to a much higher level,” His Majesty said. “This is where the importance of lifelong education lies, especially balanced education for worldly and ukhrawi importance.”

His Majesty also highlighted for UNISSA to continue improving its research programmes for teaching excellence such as in Islamic law, Islamic banking and finance, agriculture, Halal science and contemporary issues faced by the Muslim community, there are areas that can be explored for research by UNISSA academics.

“The achievements and excellence in teaching and research will make UNISSA one of the leading Islamic universities in the world.”

Another aspect highlighted by His Majesty is UNISSA’s development in the publication field with 33 new scholarly books published in 2021 through international collaboration with its Research and Publication Centre.

“Thirty-three books in various fields written in Malay, English and Arabic is not an easy task, but is a result of brainstorming efforts through studies and research as well. Therefore, UNISSA deserves a pat on the back based on such efforts that can be described as ‘significant’ that qualifies UNISSA to have its own level of rank.”

His Majesty added that such efforts are best continued and worth emulating.

“I once again congratulate all graduates, hoping that all of them will use the knowledge gained to jointly address and resolve the contemporary issues facing the Muslim community at this time.

“I also wish to congratulate and acknowledge all of UNISSA’s workforce including council and senate members, rector, core officers, academic teaching workforce, as well as the university officers and staff for their services and efforts in making the 11th Hafl Al-Takharruj a success. May Allah the Almighty bless them with multiple rewards,” His Majesty said.
