Emphasising human resources’ role in addressing skill shortages, mismatches

Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s (CIPD) Head of Market Development (Global) and Interim Market Director (Asia) May Leng Kwok recently noted how Brunei Darussalam and other ASEAN member states are tackling skill shortages and mismatches in alignment with regional goals such as Brunei Vision 2035.

She was delivering a keynote on ‘Navigating ASEAN’s Skills Terrain – Bridging Gaps’, where she shared practical insights of the impact on organisations and suggested actionable strategies to address these challenges. She also emphasised the crucial role human resources (HR) practitioners play and the specific skills they need to stay relevant.

The keynote was delivered at a learn and connect session on the topic ‘Navigating ASEAN’s Skills Terrain – Bridging Gaps’ at The Rizqun International Hotel on March 6, attended by some 40 Human Resources Society (HRS) members, comprising HR professionals across the country.

The keynote was followed by a fireside chat between May Leng and HRS Vice President Marzalenie binti Haji Omar as well as HRS Brunei members to further develop Brunei’s HR competitiveness.

The event was organised by HRS as a collaborative effort with the CIPD for the third time since last June 2023. The event kicked-off with opening remarks from HRS President Hajah Zainab MA Omar.
