It is also imperative that members actively contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the legal system and embrace technological advancements.

Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar placed great emphasis on these aspects in his opening speech during the annual assembly of the Syariah Courts, State Judiciary Department at the Prime Minister’s Office recently.

In addressing the intersection of law and technology, he deliberated on topics such as data privacy, cybersecurity and ethical considerations. The Chief Syar’ie Judge urged legal practitioners to actively involve themselves in these challenges and play a role in developing responsible frameworks for emerging technologies.

The Chief Syar’ie Judge also discussed the dynamic landscape of artificial intelligence (AI), its potential benefits and ethical implications. The emphasis was on the necessity of a balanced approach guided by ethical principles.

The Chief Syar’ie Judge also congratulated Dato Seri Setia Haji Johar bin Haji Muhamad on becoming a permanent panel Judge of the Syariah Court of Appeal, highlighting the importance of this elevation.

Addressing corporal punishment, the Chief Syar’ie Judge underscored the importance of implementing it with adherence to standard operating procedures and Syariah principles.

He expressed hope for continued progress in maintaining discipline, integrity, and professionalism within the Syariah Courts.

The Chief Syar’ie Judge commended the dedication of Syariah Courts’ personnel, acknowledging their contributions throughout 2023.

SYARIAH COURTS ASSEMBLY HIGHLIGHTS

The annual assembly stands as a crucial and central platform, providing an invaluable opportunity to comprehensively review and assess the various programmes and activities undertaken throughout the year.

Acting Chief Registrar of the Syariah Appeal Court Pengiran Mohammaddin bin Pengiran Haji Aliakbar, during the assembly, emphasised its significance in reflecting on achievements, sharing plans, and celebrating retiring or transitioning personnel.

The highlight of the morning was the presentation of the Syariah Courts Service Awards for 2023, recognising outstanding commitment and performance. The Acting Chief Registrar congratulated the awardees, expressing hope for continued excellence.

The assembly went on to outline achievements in 2023, including registered cases, crime statistics, and key performance indicators (KPIs). Notable efforts included advocacy workshops for aspiring Syariah lawyers and collaborations with external entities.

Plans for 2024 were unveiled, focusing on enhancing capabilities, improving public access to justice, and streamlining case management. The commitment to customer service and continuous improvement underscores the Syariah Court’s dedication to upholding justice in accordance with Syariah principles.
