A Bangladeshi national was sentenced to eight months’ jail and three strokes of the cane by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to 14 years of overstaying in the country.

Md Motaleb Hossain, 33, was arrested on March 27 by immigration officials after he was unable to produce valid travel documents. Further investigation led to discovering that the defendant arrived in Brunei on a social visit pass on August 14, 2009 and had survived on odd jobs as a freelancer up until his arrest.

Records show that the defendant had overstayed by 4,960 days after the expiry of his social visit pass on August 27, 2009, with no extensions sought for.
