    Educators explore modern farming practices

A group of 21 educators participated in a Professional Development (PD) programme organised by the Agriculture School-Based Committee.

The programme’s highlight was an educational and working visit to IAMFOOD Brunei.

The visit aimed at deepening teachers’ understanding of modern farming practices, with a particular focus on the integration of technology in agriculture.

The key learning objectives included exploring hydroponics, fertigation, natural composting, and the reuse of coco peat.

Teachers also learnt about pest control techniques and the cultivation of crops such as chilli, watermelon, and golden melon.

The group was welcomed by IAMFOOD Brunei Farm Director Ellin Chong.

Chong shared insights into the farm’s vision, sustainable practices, and commitment to eco-friendly farming innovations.

The tour included a comprehensive walk-through of IAMFOOD’s state-of-the-art greenhouses, weather monitoring systems, and their advanced fertigation systems – an automated method of delivering water and nutrients to plants with precision.

“The visit has been incredibly eye-opening,” said one participating teacher. “Learning about these modern agricultural techniques first-hand has not only broadened our knowledge but also inspired us to incorporate elements of sustainability and technology into our teaching.”

The School-Based Committee views this PD initiative as a crucial step towards equipping educators with relevant, hands-on knowledge that can be shared with students, particularly in areas relating to science, environmental education, and entrepreneurship.

The visit concluded with a group reflection session, where teachers discussed ideas on how to integrate the experience into classroom learning and community projects.

With sustainability and innovation becoming more essential in today’s world, the knowledge gained from this visit is expected to have a meaningful impact both inside and outside the classroom.
