Education plays a crucial role in tackling climate change issues, Ambassador-Designate of Japan to Brunei Darussalam Maeda Toru highlighted in his speech at the closing ceremony of the Environmental Education Tour Project (EETP) yesterday.
Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Corporation (Brunei Liaison Office) Country Representative Tadashi Hara shared his hope for the EETP activities to aid in spreading awareness on the environment within the nation.
The ceremony began with a welcoming speech from Legislative Council (LegCo) member and Green Brunei co-founder Yang Berhormat Khairunnisa binti Haji Ash’ari. Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin was the guest of honour.
The event saw the announcement of winners of the art, e-poster and video competition, which drew participation from 300 students.
Tiong Ing Hoe from Seri Mulia Sarjana School came in first place in the Boy’s Category while Nurdina Adilah binti Haji Abdul Zamri from Orang Kaya Besar Imas Primary School was the winner in the Girl’s Category. Both received BND200 cash prizes, trophies and certificates.
Meanwhile, Erin Ashley Chin Siew Yin from Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School received BND400 in cash prize, trophy and certificate as the winner of the e-poster competition, while Ma’sum bin Haji Isa from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali received BND500 in cash prize, trophy and certificate for snatching the top spot in the video competition.
The EETP also engaged over 1,000 students in physical and virtual tours to Tenaga Suria Brunei and Seria Energy Lab, and saw the distribution of 1,000 tree saplings in a ‘Stay at Home Tree Planting’ campaign across all four districts.
Representatives from government departments and the private sector were also present.
The project was supported by the MoE, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism, Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, and Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd.
