Education minister highlights efforts to bridge student achievement gap and promote green education

Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh emphasised ongoing efforts to improve student performance and integrate sustainability into the national education system during the first meeting of the 21st Legislative Council (LegCo) session on Wednesday.

Addressing concerns about the disparity between primary and secondary school achievements, the minister acknowledged the need for continued improvements to ensure consistency in student outcomes. While literacy and numeracy levels have shown progress over the years, results from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022 indicated that Brunei’s students, despite improvements, remain below the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) average.

“The correlation between high-performing schools in PISA and O-Level results is weak. This means that schools excelling in PISA do not necessarily produce students with strong O-Level achievements,” she explained.

To address this, the Ministry of Education is implementing several measures, including curriculum revisions, competency-based assessments, intervention programmes, and digital learning platforms. The initiatives aim to enhance literacy and numeracy while supporting students through guided learning, differentiated teaching, and counseling services.

The minister also outlined the country’s commitment to fostering green education through the development of a Green Education Plan. This initiative focuses on integrating environmental education into the curriculum, enhancing green infrastructure in schools, promoting sustainable school operations, engaging the community in environmental initiatives, and expanding research in green technology.

The ministry is also working on establishing Green Career Pathways through technical and vocational education, ensuring that Brunei’s future workforce is equipped with skills for the evolving green economy.

“The implementation of this plan will enhance Brunei’s competitiveness and attract global investors and companies committed to sustainability,” the minister added.

With these efforts, the government aims to elevate student achievement, strengthen the education system, and support the nation’s transition to a sustainable future. – Fadley Faisal
