DPMM FC set for SPL match against Lion City Sailors

DPMM FC will resume their campaign in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) 2024/2025 season with a home clash against Lion City Sailors at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas tomorrow.

It will mark a first competitive game for the Brunei-based outfit in the new calendar year.

The much-anticipated fixture comes after a 1-1 draw in a friendly match against Malaysian Super League side Kuching City FC earlier this month.

The Gegar Gegar men will be raring to make a strong impact against their opponent who are challenging for the title.

The Lion City Sailors match was initially set to take place on today, but was re-scheduled to accommodate the Singaporean club’s participation at the Shopee Cup against Kuala Lumpur City FC on January 9.

The Sailors will be in buoyant mood ahead of the league tie following a 2-0 win against the Malaysian side courtesy of goals from Bailey Wright and Maxime Lestienne.

Nevertheless, DPMM FC have made reinforcements following the arrival of Icelandic defender Damir Muminovic and Latvian forward Davis Ikaunieks to bolster their attack and defence.

DPMM FC, who currently sit sixth in the league with 21 points, have fifth-placed Balestier Khalsa to catch with a win putting them just two points adrift in the top five.

The sole Brunei professional club were handed a significant boost to their hopes of moving into the top five after managing a double over Albirex Niigata (S) with a 3-2 win on November 2 last year.

DPMM FC Head Coach Jamie McAllister’s charges will be wary of the threat having lost twice against the Lion City Sailors this season, conceding five without a reply in both games.

The SPL has introduced several changes this season, including an increased foreign quota and the removal of the mandatory Under-23 player requirement, thus enhancing the league’s competitiveness and aligning with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) regulations.

Fans are encouraged to show their support with tickets for the covered seating area costing BND8 and uncovered seating area priced at BND5. – Fadhil Yunus
