Dos and don’ts during hot weather

Brunei Darussalam is currently experiencing the southwest monsoon, a period typically characterised by stable atmospheric conditions and occasional heavy thunderstorms, according to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department.

However, amid the seasonal pattern, the country is also encountering warm weather, where scorching sun in the morning persists until late afternoon, often followed by sudden evening showers. During the unpredictable weather, individuals face heightened risks of illness, including heat strokes. The Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BRC) provided safety guidelines to mitigate these risks.

Individuals are advised to dress lightly, stay well-hydrated, maintain adequate nutrition and avoid strenuous physical activities, especially during humid and dry conditions. Homes should be kept cool. The public is advised to check on pets and children and never leave them in parked vehicles.

The elderly, especially those living independently or in isolation, are particularly vulnerable.

BRC advised that they receive at least two daily visits, protecting them from direct sunlight with curtains or blinds, and maintaining indoor temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius (oC).

It is essential to confirm their refrigerators are functional and stocked with enough food and beverages. Elderly individuals should wear light clothing, have emergency contacts readily accessible and be educated on preventive measures.

For those feeling unwell during a heat wave, immediate action is necessary if symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, intense thirst or headaches occur. Moving to a cool area, rehydrating with water and ensuring medications are stored below 25oC or refrigerated are crucial.

Symptoms to watch for include headaches, confusion, loss of appetite, nausea, excessive sweating, pale and clammy skin, muscle cramps, rapid breathing or pulse and a body temperature of 37oC or higher.

Children may exhibit additional signs like lethargy and drowsiness.

It is highly encouraged to check on elderly neighbours or individuals living alone with these conditions. A visit or phone call can make a significant difference in ensuring their well-being. – Lyna Mohamad
