Does work experience matter in recruitment?

I graduated with a degree in anthropology 10 years ago and have since been looking for a way to join the public sector, but to no avail.

It’s been eight years since I settled in a media-related job at a private company, but I haven’t stopped applying for openings in the government relevant to either my academic qualification or job experience, such as public relations officer, editor and media checker.

But despite all these efforts, my applications are often overlooked, even when I fit all the criteria listed in the postings. Having been rejected so many times, I’m starting to wonder if my work experience even factors into my application.

I followed the recent Legislative Council meeting and was inspired by the discussions brought to the table. Authorities are obviously determined to make full use of our country’s human capital, and to do so, I believe the best way is to revamp the recruitment system.

There are a lot of us who would like to serve the country in one way or another; and many of us have been through the wringer, that is the private sector system, where new hires are expected to learn on the job from day one.

We are a hardy bunch, especially in motivating ourselves to work hard despite low pay.

The public sector ought to take advantage of our experience to improve civil service. Recruitment should therefore prioritise relevant work experience instead of focusing solely on qualification.
