Disaster victims receive financial aid

The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCYS), through the Community Development Department (JAPEM), yesterday extended financial assistance on behalf of the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to families who were victims of recent house collapse and extreme weather conditions.

Permanent Secretary (Strategy and Policy Management) at the MCYS Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan presented the contribution to two families involved in house collapse and 12 whose home were damaged by strong winds during a ceremony at the ministry’s Citra Budaya Hall.

On July 7, the house of Hajah Chuchu binti Haji Abdullah located in Kampong Saba Ujong collapsed around 10am, causing damage to the house nearby, belonging to Hajah Jokiah binti Haji Dollah.

The occupants managed to escape upon hearing a loud crack before the house caved.

Meanwhile, roofs of seven houses in Kampong Pekan Lama, Kampong Bendahara Lama, Kampong Serasa, Kampong Pengiran Setia Negara, Kampong Pandai Besi ‘B’ and Kampong Selayun in the Brunei-Muara district and five houses in Kampong Penanjong, Kampong Penapar, Kampong Tumpuan Ugas, Kampong Keramut, Kampong Danau and Kampong Kandang in Tutong District were blown away following heavy downpours and strong winds on July 9 and 10.
