Digitalisation in construction industry: Minister emphasises balance with tradition

The construction industry is undergoing a transformative shift with the adoption of digitalisation and artificial intelligence (AI), according to Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid. Speaking at the opening of the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) Congress 2024 at Rizqun International Hotel on Monday, the Minister highlighted how the industry has evolved beyond traditional practices, marking the end of manual measurements and calculations.

“Today, digitalisation and artificial intelligence are at the forefront, revolutionising our industry and reshaping economies and lifestyles,” the Minister said. He pointed to the rise of electric vehicles as a testament to how digital technology and smart innovations have become integral to modern life.

Despite these advancements, the Minister urged the industry to remain steadfast in preserving culture, heritage, human values, integrity, and professionalism. “As we embrace digitalisation, we must not lose sight of these core principles,” he emphasised.

The PAQS Congress 2024, themed “Digitalisation Towards a Smart Nation,” underscores the transformative impact of digitalisation on the construction industry.

Organised by the Pacific Association of Quantity Surveyors (PAQS) and Pertubuhan Ukur Jurutera dan Arkitek (PUJA) Brunei, the event brought together up to 300 participants, including PUJA members, surveyors, engineers, architects, and representatives from various ministries.

PUJA President Sr. Haji Awang Mohammad Hanafi Bin Pehin Orang Kaya Di Gadong Seri Di Raja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Abdul Rahman and PAQS Chair Professor Anthony Mills also addressed the gathering, highlighting the significance of the Congress in advancing the fields of surveying, engineering, and architecture on a global scale.

The Congress features nine concurrent sessions and a distinguished lineup of international speakers from countries including Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and South Korea.
