By embracing new strategies, addressing challenges and exploring future directions, we can create an educational system that is more equitable, engaging and effective, said Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh at the 68th Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMEO INNOTECH) Governing Board Meeting yesterday.
She added the meeting served as a platform to discuss the direction and strategies of SEAMEO INNOTECH, while also sharing ideas and innovations that can positively impact future generations.
Touching on the theme ‘Empowering Education through Digital Innovation: Strategies, Challenges, and Future Directions’, the minister highlighted the relevance of digital transformation in education.
She stressed the need to harness digital technologies to enhance learning, overcome barriers and prepare education systems for the future.
The 2022 Declaration on the Digital Transformation of Education Systems in ASEAN commits member states to promoting access to digital technologies, fostering digital literacy and equipping citizens with transferable skills, underscoring the importance of preparing societies for a digitally connected world.
“The ministry has made significant progress through the Digital Economy Masterplan 2025, which aims to transform education through digital innovation,” she said.
The minister, however, acknowledged that challenges remain, including the digital divide, cybersecurity concerns and resistance to change. The challenges must be addressed through open communication and collaboration among SEAMEO member countries to build a more resilient education system.
The minister emphasised the need to continue innovating and adapting to overcome these challenges.
“Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and immersive tools can revolutionise education by offering personalised learning experiences and automating tasks.
“However, careful consideration is needed to ensure these developments address key concerns.”
The minister expressed hope that the meeting would push the boundaries of innovation and lead to practical strategies that can be implemented.
She emphasised that empowering education through digital innovation is not just about adopting new technologies but reimagining the way teaching and learning are approached.
The discussions during the meeting will guide efforts toward building a more resilient and inclusive education system for the region. “Let us work together towards achieving our shared goals for the benefit of future generations,” she said. – Lyna Mohamad
