DES shuts down crypto mining operations with unauthorised connections

Two more cryptocurrency mining operations were discovered and shut down following a joint operation by the Department of Electrical Services (DES), the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Autoriti Elektrik Negara Brunei Darussalam (AENBD) yesterday.

The 30-man operation, a follow-up to operations on December 28 and 31, 2022, raided two locations at Kampong Menglait and Kampong Serasa.

The two premises at commercial complexes were found to have made unauthorised electrical connections for cryptocurrency mining rigs and the crypto mining machines were confiscated by the RBPF.

The operation was aimed at minimising electrical hazards and preventing mishaps such as fire, loss of life and damage to properties. Electrical connections made without permission and meter tampering are offences under Section 3 and 9, Chapter 71 of the Electricity Act where if convicted will be fined no more than BND50,000 and imprisonment of no more than three years or both.

Those with information of suspicious activities such as unauthorised connection of electricity can contact Darussalam Line 123 or e-mail to des.info@des.gov.bn.
