    Department unearths multiple violations

Two foreign nationals were recently sentenced for violating Chapter 17 of the Immigration Act and Chapter 146 of the Passport Act.

Norhani binti Jamudin, 43, received a sentence of five months’ imprisonment and a BND800 fine as a replacement for corporal punishment. Her sentence was extended to six months due to her inability to pay the fine. She was charged with overstaying in Brunei after her immigration pass expired.

The prosecution resulted from an operation carried out by the Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD) Law Enforcement Division in Mukim Peramu. The case was heard before Magistrate Abdul ‘Azim bin Othman.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Sariul, 27, was sentenced for failing to present travel documents to immigration officers when entering Brunei Darussalam through the Temporary Immigration Control Post at Labu in the Temburong District and entering the country without a valid immigration pass. He was fined BND2,000 and sentenced to three months imprisonment with three canings. His inability to pay the fine resulted in an additional two-month’s imprisonment.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif heard the case. The prosecution was conducted by INRD Prosecutor Hadiyatul Majeedah binti Usin.

Meanwhile, the Law Enforcement Division conducted two operations in Mukim Mentiri, where one resulted in the detention of two foreign nationals suspected of violating Regulation 15(2) and Regulation 15(3) of the Immigration Regulations, Chapter 17, by working for a different employer than stated and holding a position not specified in their passport. Another operation involved a house in Mukim Mentiri, where one foreign national was detained under the same suspicions. – Fadley Faisal
