A team of four third-year dental students from Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) organised a Periodontal Disease Awareness Campaign (PDAC).
The campaign aimed at raising awareness, management, and prevention of periodontal disease among the public, as the team believes that such a disease is a silent threat to the community.
Periodontal disease is an infection and inflammation of the gums and bone surrounding and supporting teeth. If not managed and treated properly, it may lead to daily life complications and, eventually, tooth loss. It is caused by poor oral hygiene, such as inadequate brushing and not flossing. Symptoms of the disease can be reddish or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, mobile teeth, gums recession, pain when chewing, and bleeding gums when brushing or flossing.
The team visited sixth form schools and mini-exhibitions at BandarKu Ceria, Book Fair, UBD, and shopping malls. The team also promotes online activities such as quizzes and competitions for poster creation through its social media accounts to connect with a larger population.
