Defence ministers reaffirm commitment to peace

ASEAN defence ministers exchanged views on regional and international security environment, and ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) members reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability as well as recognised the significant role of ASEAN in strengthening solidarity, practical cooperation and multilateralism.

The 10th ADMM-Plus convened at the Jakarta Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.

The meeting was chaired by Indonesian Minister of Defence Prabowo Subianto and was attended by defence ministers and representatives from the ASEAN and Plus countries as well as from Timor Leste as an observer of the ADMM and related meetings.

Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, who headed the Brunei Darussalam delegation to the 17th ADMM on Wednesday, attended the meeting.

He was accompanied by Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Defence (MinDef) Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Alirupendi bin Haji Perudin, as the Sultanate’s ASEAN Defence Senior Official Meeting Plus (ADSOM Plus) leader, and other senior officials from the MinDef.

The 10th ADMM-Plus observed a report from the ASEAN Secretariat on recent developments in ASEAN. Indonesia, as the Chair, announced the new set of ADMM-Plus Experts’ Working Group (EWG) co-chairs for the 2024-2027 cycle, for which Brunei will be co-chairing the fifth cycle of the ADMM-Plus EWG on Peacekeeping Operations with China.

A handover ceremony of the ADMM Chairmanship from Indonesia to Laos officially marked the conclusion of Indonesia’s chairmanship of ADMM for 2023.

Laos will assume the role as Chair for ADMM and its related meetings for 2024 with the ADMM Retreat, the 18th ADMM and the 11th ADMM-Plus scheduled to take place respectively in March and November 2024.

The theme for next year’s ADMM and related meetings will be ‘ASEAN: Together for Peace, Security and Resilience’.
