Dance pop perfection

SEOUL (ANN/THE KOREA HERALD) – Lee Chaeyeon makes a highly anticipated return with her third mini album, “Showdown,” following the success of her debut single, “The Move: Street,” released ten months ago. The singer played an integral role in the album’s creation, from writing the lyrics to crafting the choreography.

The lead track, “Don’t,” is a two-step dance pop song infused with everyday sounds like phone rings. Its repetitive lyrics and catchy melody convey the raw emotions of a challenging breakup.

“I felt confident imagining this song on stage. Its melody is catchy, and the lyrics are immersive,” Lee shared.

Known for her dynamic performances, Lee aimed to surprise her audience with intricate choreography. “I wanted to avoid repetition. I focused on details like varied choreography and the number of dancers, ensuring it was visually captivating. I thought through it meticulously until satisfied,” she said.

Lee also penned the lyrics for “Don’t” and another B-side track, “Dreaming.” She explained that “Charlie,” mentioned in the title track, symbolises a darker side of herself. “Charlie represents my hidden, darker side, while Chaeyeon is my ordinary self. Through their conflict, I wanted to capture both separation in love and inner turmoil,” she explained.

Lee expressed pride in her growing confidence, especially during the album’s production. “Working on this album, I felt I could call myself an all-rounder, excelling in more than just performance. I strive to become an artist worthy of that title.”

Her younger sister, Chaeryeong of Itzy, provided significant support. “Chaeryeong filmed the challenge video for my new song before heading off on tour. She loved the song and encouraged me strongly,” Lee said.

She also spoke of her friendship with rapper Lee Youngji. “Youngji and I met before her song ‘Small Girl’ was released, sharing our music videos. We loved each other’s work and wished for mutual success.”

“Releasing a new album makes me happy, but I also want to make my fans and parents proud by getting it into the top 100 charts and staying there for a long time,” Lee concluded with a shy smile.
