Cultivating interest in agriculture among younger students

Early education to cultivate interest among the young generation on agriculture exists in the current school curriculum, Minister of Education Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman said yesterday.

He said this in response to a statement by Legislative Council (LegCo) member Yang Berhormat Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Mumin who suggested to introduce agricultural education and activities in primary schools to develop interest in agriculture among the young generation to develop the agriculture industry.

“There are several primary schools which have introduced planting as part of their niche activities,” said the minister.

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah explained that education on agriculture is introduced to students as early as primary education as part of the science curriculum.

“Schools will take into account the level of interests shown by the community around the school, as in the case of Masin Secondary School, which has generateda huge interest leading to a focus on agriculture based activities and education,” said the minister.
