Crown Prince officiates UTB convocation festival

His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), officiated the eighth UTB Convocation Festival at the Teratak Putih, UTB yesterday.

His Royal Highness was greeted by Minister of Education and Chair of UTB Council Datin Seri Setia Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh and UTB Vice-Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

UTB Council, senior government officials, guests, staff and students were also present. The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar.

His Royal Highness then officiated the event, followed by the call of Takbir and a multimedia presentation.

The ceremony proceeded with His Royal Highness viewing the ‘I am Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (iAIML): Redefining Tomorrow’ exhibition.

The exhibition showcased eight projects undertaken by the graduating students under the theme iAIML, including Mathematical Optimisation Modelling and Metaheuristics by Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Mathematics and Economics Hasnanizan binti Haji Md Taib, Utilising Digital Image Correlation for Strain Measurement of Materials by Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Sanford Lim Sen Hui, Design and Fabrication the Upper Limb Rehabilitation Assisted Robot Prototype by Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering Muhammad Khair Hamizan bin Surzana @ Abdul Khaliq, and Development of a Twelve Degrees of Freedom (12DOF) Hexapod Robot Prototype by Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Muhammad Yazeed bin A Jamil.

Other projects included the Prediction of Grain Size Distribution from Wireline Logs (Machine Learning Aspect) by Bachelor of Engineering in Petroleum Engineering Nurin’ Azma Syaheerah binti Zainal Arifin, Your Face Has a Gender: A Study on How Artificial Intelligence is Used to Predict the Gender of Southeast Asian People by Bachelor of Science in Computing with Data Analytics Mohd Mugri Izzuddin bin Haji Md Jamil, Protecting ASEAN’s Peatlands: Machine Learning for Modelling Peat Groundwater Level and Peat Fire Occurrences by Bachelor of Science in Computing with Data Analytics Fuad bin Haji Hussain, and Benchable: A Sustainable and Transformative Bench by Bachelor of Science in Product Design Mohamad Harun bin Abdul Khalid.

His Royal Highness also watched performances by the university student clubs, including martial arts, traditional dance and Tausyeh. His Royal Highness also officiated the Shell AI Lab sponsored by Shell Deepwater Borneo.

His Royal Highness also received a pesambah from UTB students.

A series of events have been lined up in conjunction with the convocation festival, including Khatam Al-Quran, Ecovention, No Bag Day, International (Culture) Day, Traditional Attire Day, UTBeWell, Unicycle, Bridges of Opportunity, UTBerjaya, and AI talk.

The annual festival aims to celebrate the students who have completed their studies and will receive their certificates at the UTB Convocation Ceremony on September 14 at the Plenary Hall of the International Convention Centre in Berakas. – Adib Noor
