Croc shock: Firefighters capture four-metre reptile in drain

James Kon

Firefighters captured a four-metre-long crocodile in a drain at Kampong Tasek Meradun on Monday.

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (FRD), seven firefighters from Bandar Seri Begawan Fire Station, led by ABK 142 Matnoor bin Haji Md Hussin, responded to the wild animal disturbance report lodged at 3.54pm.

Firefighters caught the reptile with a snare catcher and a rope, and handed it over to the Wildlife Division before it had a chance to injure residents.

The FRD said unclean premises with rodent infestation are more prone to attracting wild animals such as crocodiles, snakes and monitor lizards.

Abandoned and unkempt lawns may become the animals’ nesting and breeding ground, the agency added.

The public is urged to report to the FRD if they encounter wild animals roaming residential or commercial areas, and advised against approaching or threatening wild animals, leaving their houses, while observing cleanliness and ensuring windows and doors closed.
