Croc capture efforts to tackle reptile presence in Brunei waters

The Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT) through its Wildlife Division at the Forestry Department implemented the Tangkap Buaya Bersama Programme to strengthen human-crocodile conflict control initiatives since February.

Permanent Secretary at the MPRT Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab participated in the programme’s implementation in Kampong Ayer’s Kampong Tamoi Ujong yesterday. The programme was carried out by Wildlife Division’s Action Team with Mukim Zone 1 and Zone 2 Consultative Council (MPM) led by Penghulu Raimi bin Awang Rashid and Kampong Tamoi Village Consultative Council (MPK) led by Haji Tarif bin Haji Asgar.

The event saw a briefing on the use of hook and line to catch crocodiles. Under the programme, hooks and lines are setup at locations with frequent crocodile sightings monitored by villagers.

Director of Forestry Department Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim, representatives from Brunei-Muara District Office, Zone 1 and 2 penghulus and village heads were also present.

Wildlife Division’s Action Team was set up in 2018 to deal with crocodiles in Brunei waters.

Measures and initiatives include installing warning signs, briefings during roadshows, dialogues, distributing posters and sharing information via mass media and social media. – James Kon
