The Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday sentenced two foreign nationals, Dwi Puji Wijayanti, 40, and Emiliya, 56, to three months in prison and fined each BND1,000 for overstaying their visas, with both sentences tied to violations uncovered during Operasi Kabat 2024. Due to their inability to pay the fine, their prison terms were extended to four months.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni presided over the case, with Prosecuting Officer Hadiyatul Majeedah binti Awang Usin representing the Immigration and National Registration Department (JIPK).
The sentences stem from Operasi Kabat 123/2024, a recent enforcement operation targeting residences and rented rooms for foreign workers in Mukim Pengkalan Batu and Mukim Sengkurong. Law enforcement officers inspected 23 foreign nationals, detaining 13 for further investigation. Eight of the detained individuals reportedly failed to provide original documentation, with one also suspected of working without authorisation under Regulation 15(2) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17. Additionally, five others were held for overstaying after their immigration passes expired, in violation of Regulation 15(1).
Another operation, Operasi Kabat 122/2024, targeted commercial premises in Mukim Sengkurong and Mukim Kilanas, resulting in the inspection of nine foreign nationals and detention of four. The alleged offences included working with unauthorised employers and overstaying after visa expiry.
The Immigration Department encourages members of the public to report any suspected immigration violations through its hotline numbers at 8734888 or 8753888 in Bandar Seri Begawan, and 8984111 in Kuala Belait. – FADLEY FAISAL
