The Magistrate’s Court on Thursday handed sentences to a pair of Indonesians who pleaded guilty to overstaying after evading the authorities.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni sentenced 46-year-old Sudarmano to three months’ jail with three whippings while 44-year-old Purwati got a year and a month’s jail.
Immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra Adanan revealed that immigration enforcement officers arrested the duo from a rented quarter at Jalan Pasai in Sengkurong at 3.25am on March 8 during routine inspections.
The pair failed to confirm their legitimate stay and was brought in for questioning. It was revealed that Sudarmano’s employment pass had been cancelled and was due for repatriation by October 4, 2022. Purwati was found to have been removed from the country on November 11, 2019 for violating immigration laws.
She had entered Brunei on July 12, 2022 with a fake identity, enabling her to use a passport without recognition of a person who had been barred from entering the country.
