Court orders thief to pay fine

The Magistrate’s Court on Thursday ordered a permanent resident to settle a BND1,500 fine after he pleaded guilty to stealing from a department store.

Adam Qusyairie bin Abdullah Denis @ Roysten Resa anak Denis, 25, would have to serve a month’s jail in default of payment of the fine.

Prosecutors Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad and Nurulatikah binti Haji Husaini revealed in court that the defendant had gone to a department store at Times Square Shopping Centre in Kampong Jaya Setia, Jalan Berakas at 2.30pm on June 8.

On entering and going to the first floor of the store, the defendant planned to steal and made away with an inverter welder, a screwdriver and a hair wax before leaving the store.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif heard from the prosecutors that on June 11, a staff discovered the items had gone missing.

This prompted the staff to check the CCTV and came across a footage recording the defendant in action.

The staff shared the footage across the store branches.

On June 13, a senior staff of the store’s branch in Menglait, Gadong recognised a man entering the store to be the same person from the CCTV footage earlier. The senior staff called the police and instructed a staff to detain the defendant.

The police arrested the defendant on arrival. None of the stolen items were recovered, as the defendant claimed to have used the screwdriver and hair wax, while giving away the inverter welder to a friend. – Fadley Faisal
