Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida

On behalf of the Government and people of Japan, I have the honour to extend to Your Majesty my heartfelt congratulations on the auspicious occasion of the 39th anniversary of the independence of Brunei Darussalam. I was very pleased to see Your Majesty in person and have a fruitful exchange of views with you in Cambodia last November.

With the long historical bonds between the imperial family of Japan and the royal family of Brunei, our two countries are expanding the scope of cooperation in a wide range of areas such as the economy, energy, climate change and people-to-people exchanges. In the security field, I welcome the signing of the Memorandum on Defence Cooperation and Exchanges between Japan and Brunei on the third of this month. Looking ahead to the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Brunei next year, I am confident that our two countries will be able to further deepen our bilateral cooperation.

This year marks the milestone of the 50th Year of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation and I look truly forward to welcoming Your Majesty at the ASEAN-Japan Commemorative Summit to be held in Tokyo around December. Through such opportunities, Japan is determined to further strengthen cooperation with Brunei to realise a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ and the ‘ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific’, which share fundamental principles.

Please accept my best wishes for the continued good health of Your Majesty and the prosperity of Brunei Darussalam.
