Conference highlights Brunei’s biodiversity and green growth

Brunei Darussalam boasts the highest forest cover among ASEAN countries, with its rich biodiversity safeguarded by comprehensive conservation legislation. As the nation pursues economic development and diversification, it is crucial to balance this progress with the preservation of its ecosystems.

The significance of Brunei’s biodiversity was highlighted by the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, during his remarks as the guest of honour at the launch of the Brunei Darussalam Conference on Biodiversity. The event took place at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

The conference, themed “Biodiversity: Nature’s Blueprint for Sustainability,” is co-organised by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Forestry Department and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). It is part of the Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2024 (Brunei MYCE 2024).

The conference aims to connect policymakers, academics, and non-governmental sectors with a regional network of biodiversity leaders. It provides a powerful platform for sharing knowledge, research findings, and best practices globally. Additionally, the event explores opportunities for green economic growth, including eco-tourism and market initiatives such as the carbon market.

Over the three-day conference, approximately 52 papers will be presented, offering valuable insights and fostering collaboration in biodiversity conservation. – James Kon
