A company was fined BND1,400 for operating telecommunication services without a valid licence, said the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) yesterday.
The agency said they issued two compound fines to the business owner for operating a telecommunications service without a valid licence and for renting out walkie-talkies without a valid licence.
The agency said such offences are punishable under Sections 33(1) and 34(2) of the Telecommunication Order, 2001. Any person found guilty of such infringements can be issued a compound fine of up to BND1,000 for each offence.
If convicted, the penalty for an offence under Section 33(1) is a fine up to BND100,000; imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years; or both.
Meanwhile, the penalty for an offence under Section 34(2) is a fine up to BND10,000; imprisonment up to three years; or both.
The agency reminded the public that unlicensed systems or services may cause interference to critical infrastructure and essential services, which may disrupt day-to-day operations of agencies, service providers, institutions and businesses that rely on telecommunications.
