‘Common interests forge strong ties’

The alignment of Russia and Brunei’s positions on issues such as climate change, counterterrorism and regional security have been instrumental in fostering friendly ties.

The commonality of interests has enabled both countries to work collaboratively on global stages, voting in unison on matters of mutual concern and a paramount feature of the diplomatic engagement is the emphasis both countries place on strengthening cooperation within ASEAN.

This was shared by Ambassador of Russia to Brunei Darussalam Mikhail Vladimirovich Baranov at the Diplomat’s Day celebration hosted by the embassy in Kampong Manggis II yesterday.

“As a longstanding dialogue partner of the Association, Russia actively seeks to bolster its diverse relationship with the organisation that resonates positively with Brunei,” he added.

“Both our nations are eager to maintain and strengthen the central role that ASEAN plays in shaping regional affairs and maintaining peace and stability in Southeast Asia.”

The event began with welcoming remarks highlighting some points on the Diplomat’s Day where the ambassador noted the era characterised by conflicts and geopolitical complexities, the role of diplomacy emerges as a linchpin in preventing the global community from descending into the tumultuous abyss of warfare and disorder.

The Russian diplomatic tradition demonstrated a commitment to fostering a world built on fairness, mutual respect and cooperation and the pursuit of a just and inclusive global framework remains at the core of Russian diplomatic endeavours.

Challenges faced by diplomats are multifaceted and intricate and navigating through the intricacies of international relations demands a nuanced approach, blending pragmatism with a steadfast commitment to upholding the principles of justice, equality and sovereign autonomy. “On this occasion, let us express our gratitude to the diplomats of today, whose efforts contribute to the noble cause of maintaining peace, fostering understanding, and fortifying the foundations of a stable global order,” he said.

He added that through dialogue, collaboration and principled engagement, diplomats play a crucial role in shaping a world that transcends the barriers of discord and embraces the spirit of unity.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps and government officers attended the event.
