Colombia to raise tariffs on US goods by 25 pc in response to Trump’s sanctions

MOSCOW (BERNAMA-SPUTNIK/RIA NOVOSTI) – Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that the country would raise tariffs on goods imported from the United States by 25 per cent in response to sanctions by the administration of US President Donald Trump after Colombia refused to accept a plane with deported migrants, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

The US imposed sanctions and 25 per cent tariffs on all goods from Colombia on Sunday over Bogota’s refusal to accept deported migrants. Trump warned that this was only the beginning, saying that Washington would not allow Bogota to violate its obligations to accept Colombian citizens deported from the United States. Trump also banned Colombian officials from entering the United States, imposed visa restrictions on their family members and other close associates, and imposed enhanced screening on all Colombian citizens at the US border.

“ I ordered the foreign trade minister to raise tariffs on imports from the US by 25 per cent. The ministry should help direct our exports to the whole world other than the US. Our exports should be expanded,” Petro said on X.

The president also called for expanding Colombia’s exports and replacing American goods in the country.

“I invite all Colombian foreign communities to be marketers of our products. American products whose price will rise within the national economy must be replaced by national production, and the government will help in this regard,” the politician added.

In his first speech as the 47th President of the United States, Trump promised to immediately stop the penetration of undocumented immigrants into American territory and begin the process of extraditing millions of migrants back to their countries of origin. He also declared a national state of emergency in connection with the situation on the southern border of the United States.
