College fire drill a roaring success

A fire broke out at Kolej International Graduate Studies’ (KIGS) main building trapping two victims in two locations. They were rescued with minor injuries.

The first victim trapped in Tutorial Room 1, was rescued by the college’s fire marshals while the second, in Tutorial Room 17, was rescued by Fire and Rescue Department (FRD) personnel.

This was the scenario of a fire drill exercise at the college as part of Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) readiness and monitoring assessment checklist for the IBTE Approved Centre.

The fire drill was preceded by a three-day fire marshal course by Deputy Station Officer Rustam bin Affandy and attended by the college’s management team led by KIGS Chief Executive Officer Dr Haji Azahairani bin Haji Mohd Jamil.

The exercise, held in collaboration with the Bandar Seri Begawan Fire Station, saw KIGS fire marshals carry out their duties and evacuated students and staff to the designated assembly point. A fire drill observer evaluated the exercise and found the evacuation taking just two minutes and 14 seconds showing the effectiveness of the fire marshal training. The fire marshals also followed proper procedures during the rescue exercise and were advised to conduct a fire drill at least once a year. – Lyna Mohamad
