Climbing the peaks of East Java

In a world where the hustle and bustle of daily life can often feel overwhelming, a group of 12 Bruneians, led by the passionate Dayangku Sri found solace in the beauty of nature through adventure.

United by a shared love for road running and trail hiking, they set out to explore the majestic landscapes of East Java, Indonesia, embarking on a journey that would challenge them physically and spiritually.

Originally, the group planned to conquer the formidable heights of Mount Arjuna or Mount Semeru. However, due to unforeseen closures caused by forest fires and volcanic activity, they redirected their ambitions toward Mount Butak. Nestled amidst the region’s rich geography, Mount Butak offers a savanna campsite that serves as a base for climbers.

The ascent to this serene spot typically spans six to eight hours, with the summit only a short, 20-minute walk away. Though the path is steep and rocky, the reward at the top is unparalleled: sweeping views of other prominent peaks, including Mount Semeru, Mount Arjuna, and the breathtaking landscape stretching across the horizon.

“We chose Mount Butak because it represents the resilience and adaptability of our group,” said Dayangku Sri, who also managed the logistical aspects of the trip, from planning the itinerary to establishing a budget that covered guides, transportation, and accommodation.

On June 13, the adventure continued with a day trip to Tumpak Sewu, also known as the ‘Waterfall of a Thousand Waterfalls’.

The group marvelled at the stunning natural wonder, where cascading water spills majestically down cliff walls, surrounded by lush greenery. The experience underscored the group’s belief in the healing power of nature, a theme woven throughout their journey.

The trip culminated with an unforgettable sunrise at Mount Bromo on June 14. The iconic volcano, standing at an elevation of 2,329 metres, offers one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles in Indonesia.

As dawn broke, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colours, casting dramatic shadows over the rugged terrain. “Experiencing the Mount Bromo sunrise is more than just witnessing a natural wonder; it’s about the thrill of the journey,” one participant remarked.

The adventure wasn’t just about conquering peaks; it was about building camaraderie and shared experiences. The group’s approach to training involved balancing busy work and school schedules with cardiovascular exercises like hiking, running, and cycling, coupled with strength training. “We motivate each other,” said one member. “The excitement of exploring new trails keeps us connected and driven.”

For those looking to embark on their adventure, the group offers simple yet profound advice: start small, invest in quality gear, and always respect the environment. “Embrace the journey and be open to new experiences,” they encouraged, emphasising that adventure is just as much about enjoying the process as it is about reaching the destination.

With plans to explore more mountains and trails, this group of Bruneian friends continues to find joy and healing in their outdoor adventures, proving that in nature, every step taken is a step toward greater connection – with the land and with one another. – Fadley Faisal
