The climate crisis is very much an ocean crisis, Public Affairs Officer at the United States (US) Embassy in Brunei Darussalam Jeffrey Barrus said. The US is committed to championing ambitious global targets for ocean conservation, including conserving or protecting at least 30 per cent of the global ocean by 2030, he said.

He made these remarks when the Brunei-USA Association (BUSA) and Green Brunei in collaboration with Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS) organised a virtual talk on climate change and its impacts to raise awareness on Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP) strategy yesterday.

The talk aimed to share information on how the world and specifically the Sultanate intend to tackle climate change.

Ir Ahmad Zaiemaddien bin Pehin Datu Lailajasa Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Haji Awang Halbi, who is leading the BCCS at the Ministry of Development, delivered the virtual talk.

In this role, he is responsible for the implementation of the 10 key strategies set out under the BNCCP, and is the national representative to the (United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The virtual talk, participated by some 100 individuals from different professional background, also saw a 10-minute question and answer session and a video presentation on climate change by Green Brunei representative, Muhammad Saifulbahri bin Bahrin.

President of BUSA Salimah binti Haji Saim said the talk is hoped to expose its members especially the younger generation to the role in protecting and conserving the climate.

BUSA was established in 2015 to support interests shared by Brunei Darussalam and the US through commerce, education, cultural and social exchanges. Its members comprise individuals who have participated in US-sponsored programmes, fellowships, academic scholarships and, workshops as well as student chapters.
