The 10th installation of the Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement Competition 2023 (CIPTA 2023), themed ‘Innovations for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’, responds to the 2030 SDGs Agenda – which is also in line with Brunei Vision 2035 – features outstanding exhibits of ideas and solutions to tackle current challenges.
Entrepreneurs, innovators, and visionaries from various backgrounds gathered to present revolutionary concepts and enthrall audiences with their inventiveness and ingenuity with a focus on addressing critical issues on sustainability.
Hosted by Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), in partnership and sponsored by Brunei LNG, the competition saw 68 group submissions from Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN member countries, each vying to make a lasting impact on society.
Judges, comprising industry experts and renowned professionals, were entrusted with the arduous task of selecting the most exceptional projects.
The CIPTA 2023 award presentation ceremony will be held on June 8 at the International Convention Centre and will be graced by His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office with the consent of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
A notable entry in CIPTA 2021 was ‘Project Poseidon’ by former Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre student Wesley Onn Wei Rong, the second prize winner for CIPTA 2021 Category 3 for Young Inventors.
The product was a prototype automatic flood barrier designed to reduce damage and utilise the flood’s force to safeguard dwellings. The project garnered praise from the judges, who lauded its potential to revolutionise the construction sector.
Another noteworthy project was ‘Thermo-Responsive Biohydrogel for Controlled Drug Delivery’ by Maha Mohammad Hussein Al-Rajabi from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Selangor, the first prize winner in the CIPTA 2021 ASEAN New Invention and Innovation Category. The project supported SDG Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, which not only reduced waste generation, but also developed a high-demand pharmaceutical product through the adoption of sustainable practices in the material’s lifecycle.
‘Smart Fish System – Water Quality Management System for Red Tilapia Rear in Polytank’ was the first prize winner in Category 2 for Modifying Existing Product, Process and Technology, by Roshartiney binti Haji Damit, Haji Ismit bin Haji Mohamad and Dr Wida Susanty binti Haji Suhaili.
The project also supports SDG for Clean Water, utilising the Internet of Things as a solution to improve fish lifecycle safety and rearing quality.
