China is ready to explore new cooperation with the Sultanate in a number of fields, ranging from green energy to multilateral trade, said Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Xiao Jianguo on Monday.
The ambassador highlighted a number of potential fields of cooperation during his speech at a briefing at The Rizqun International Hotel.
“China is promoting industrial innovation through technological innovation and advancing comprehensive new industrialisation.
“Since Brunei has shown great interest in the digital economy, smart cities and artificial intelligence (AI), there is huge potential for deeper cooperation between the two sides,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ambassador noted that the Sultanate attaches great importance to green development and environmental protection.
He highlighted China’s achievements in the sector, stating that in 2023, it had contributed to half of the 510 million kilowatts installed renewable energy capacity around the world that year. “China is willing to explore and expand bilateral cooperation in this sector,” he added.
On China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), the ambassador said that the Sultanate is an important partner with key projects such as Hengyi Industries and Muara Port seeing steady development.
“China is ready to strengthen strategic synergy with Brunei and promote implementation of more projects that benefit the two countries,” he said.
He said that Brunei is very active in the field of multilateral trade and China is ready to develop closer cooperation in this regard.
The ambassador highlighted the close ties between China and Brunei, adding that “the two countries have achieved fruitful results in pragmatic cooperation”.
Chinese enterprises have also actively participated in Brunei’s infrastructure construction including the Temburong bridge, PMB Bridge, Ulu Tutong Dam, and the Telisai-Lumut highway, while Huawei has helped Brunei in launching commercial 5G, said the ambassador.
“Brunei’s exports of agricultural and fishery products to China have made a new step forward, and China’s hybrid rice donated to Brunei yielded a good harvest. All these bring tangible benefits to the two countries and peoples,” he said. – James Kon
