Children among eight injured in van crash in Australia

SYDNEY (XINHUA) – Eight people, including six children, have been hospitalised after a van rolled on a major highway between Sydney and Canberra yesterday.

Emergency services in the state of New South Wales (NSW) were called to the Hume Highway near the town of Marulan, about 140-100 kilometres northeast of Canberra, after the vehicle rolled at about midday local time.

NSW Police said in a statement that eight occupants, including the driver, were trapped in the vehicle for a short time before being freed by civilians. Three NSW Ambulance helicopters were deployed to the scene where two adults and six children were treated for injuries.

NSW Ambulance Acting Duty Operations Manager Ian Pollard told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the two adults were flown to hospital in a critical condition.

He said that the six children were also hospitalised, with three seriously injured.

A crime scene has been established and detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
