Charting a course towards prosperity, resilience

Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports outlines visionary strategies to shape a brighter future for Brunei

Amidst ongoing endeavours to refine its strategies and operations, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in Brunei is charting a course towards a more prosperous future. Under the stewardship of Minister Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Nazmi bin Haji Awang Mohamad, the ministry is aligning its efforts with the overarching goal of ‘United in Building a More Prosperous Future,’ as outlined in Brunei Vision 2035.

In a recent address to Legislative Council members at the PKBN Training Camp, the minister highlighted five key strategies drawn from the Ministry’s 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.

Central to these strategies is the focus on developing an Excellent, United, Resilient, and Caring Society within the community sector. The ministry’s initiatives are aimed at eradicating poverty, enhancing socio-economic independence, and fostering inclusivity.

Empowering Communities

Through targeted programmes such as the Poverty Eradication Action Plan and the Visionary Youth Innovation Programme (PIBB), the ministry is not only addressing immediate challenges but also nurturing future leaders.

Enhancements to the National Welfare System (SKN), including improved statistics gathering and heightened participation from the Legislative Council, are bolstering its efficacy.

Acknowledging the imperative of precise data, measures are being implemented to fortify SKN, garnering commendations from esteemed institutions such as the IMF and securing the Asian Technology Excellence Award.

The active involvement of Youth Volunteers (SB) and the implementation of various action plans underscore the ministry’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for all segments of society. Prominent endeavours comprise the Women’s Action Plan aimed at fostering women’s advancement, slated for unveiling at the upcoming National Council of Social Issues gathering.

Additionally, a thorough review of Monthly Welfare Assistance (BKB) guidelines ensures transparency, while a Family Action Plan reinforces family structures.

An Action Plan catering to the needs of the elderly promotes dignified ageing, complemented by the introduction of the Social Blueprint, a joint initiative between the Prime Minister’s Office and the ministry.

Elevating Sports and Cultural Heritage

The minister highlighted the remarkable accomplishments of national athletes on both regional and international platforms, securing nine medals at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games, two medals at the 19th Asian Games, and an additional two medals at the World Wushu Championship.

In furthering these achievements, the minister emphasised the ministry’s commitment to reviewing the role of sports in community development. This review encompasses four primary objectives: expanding partnerships, leveraging social media to advocate for sports as a pathway to a healthy lifestyle, enhancing accessibility to sports facilities for Persons with Disabilities (OKU) through infrastructure improvements, and bolstering sports tourism by promoting international championships.

In parallel, the ministry remains steadfast in its dedication to preserving Brunei’s rich cultural heritage. Initiatives aimed at dignifying the Malay language, preserving traditional attire, and fostering patriotism underscore Brunei’s commitment to cultural stewardship.

Collaborative nominations to UNESCO, ASEAN Arch and the ASEAN Lane in Damuan Boulevard and the Brunei History Centre as the centre of excellence for history reflect Brunei’s efforts to showcase its heritage on the global stage.

Efficiency and Innovation

Efficiency and innovation are at the forefront of the Ministry’s agenda, as it seeks to streamline processes and maximise resources.

Through the development of efficient systems and the exploration of income generation models, the ministry is laying the groundwork for sustainable growth.

Embracing digital technology and fostering collaborations with private agencies further amplify the ministry’s capacity to deliver impactful programmes.

Looking ahead, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to adaptability and evolution.

By remaining responsive to evolving needs and challenges, the ministry is poised to play a pivotal role in realising Brunei’s Vision 2035.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports is not only shaping a brighter future for Brunei but also empowering its citizens to thrive in an ever-changing landscape.
