With Ramadhan coming to a close, more and more Muslims cemeteries across the country are seeing visitors as part of a common practice during the holy month.
The activity is not only carried out during Ramadhan or Syawal but also encouraged throughout the year.
The main purpose is to remember family members who have returned to the mercy of Allah the Almighty and to seek mercy for their souls, while being reminded of death and the power of Allah the Almighty.
A recent survey conducted by the Bulletin found that cemetery visit is growing popular, with family and friends gathering to clean the cemeteries, followed by the recitation of Surah Yaasiin and Tahlil.
Islam has outlined several guidelines and etiquettes to follow and among them is for the ummah to perform ablution before visiting the cemeteries, wear modest clothing, and greet the occupants of the cemeteries. Giving charity and praying for the well-being of the deceased are also highly recommended. – Adib Noor
