Celebrating royal b’day with longest convoy

Some 350 riders yesterday banded together for the longest convoy from Belait to Brunei-Muara in celebration of the 76th birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

The convoy, organised by Mad Riders Motorcycle Group (MG), comprised solo riders and members from 34 motorcycle groups, starting at the parking lot adjacent the Tudung Saji in Kuala Belait.

Izzul Hazzwan bin Jamil from Mad Riders MG was the group president, who explained that the convoy is an annual event to commemorate the royal birthday.

Many of the motorcycles were adorned with miniature national flags with the president’s bike carrying the full-size version.

“We started from Kuala Belait to Temburong District, with a stopover at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.”

The 200-kilometre ride, he said, marked two achievements that will appear in the Brunei Book of Records. “This includes the longest convoy from Belait to Brunei-Muara, as well as the longest convoy on the Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Bridge,” he added.

“Alhamdulillah, with the easing of restrictions, we were able to conduct convoys such as this as well as other activities that we organise annually.”
