Over 1,000 students and staff of Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan (CHMS BSB) joined a walkathon held in conjunction with the school’s 100th anniversary celebration yesterday morning.

The walkathon raised over BND200,000 for the school and another BND100,000 personal donation from Chairman of the Board of Directors Ong Tiong Oh.

Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati binti Haji Tajuddin, the guest of honour, also participated in the 6.4-kilometre (km) walkathon that started at Balapan Sports Complex.

Chinese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong and members of CHMS BSB Board of Directors also joined the walk.

Chairman of the organising committee of the anniversary celebration Malcolm Lim said, “Beside celebrating CHMS BSB’s 100th anniversary, the walkathon is aimed at raising awareness on the importance of sports. Such activities promote healthy living and make sure we stay healthy.”

The school, he said, does not prioritise profit, “therefore we need assistance and support from all to develop the school which is 100 years old”.

The event also saw the handing over of BND5,000 donation to the Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans (DANA) from funds raised in the walkathon.

It was presented by Lim, Ong and principal Kho Guik Lan to DANA Secretariat Samsudin bin Haji Puasa.

There was also a surprise celebration of the chairman’s birthday with a cake and a birthday song.
