Capitalising on the halal sector

It is estimated that the global market size is expected to reach about USD9.71 trillion by 2025, while according to the State of the Global Islamic Economy Report 2020/2021, Brunei Darussalam, as part of the East ASEAN Growth Area countries, is one of the top 10 countries able to take advantage of opportunities in the halal sector and directly within the region to reach an estimated population of 239 million Muslims.

The matter was underlined by Advisor for the Halal Trade Hub and Services – IHTHS Corporation and Principal Mentor of Cottage and Youth Initiative Programme Captain (Rtd) Zailan bin Pehin Datu Kerma Setia Major (Rtd) Dato Seri Laila Jasa Mohd Don in his keynote speech during the signing ceremony of the strategic alliances agreement and product launching ceremony.

“We have to keep in mind that halal economy is part of our obligation as Muslim communities in fulfilling the demand of Fardhu Kifayah, the principle of communal responsibility,” he said.

“As our primary focus is moving towards the economy, in the context of the current challenges, it is imperative for Brunei business sectors, the local and the multinational companies, to foresee the importance of adopting the concept of global value chain mainly on Syariah compliant products.

“On the halal product achievement, we are proud to inform that our Brunei Brand Bersuci Sertu Wash, a collaboration between Thailand and Brunei companies and the Islamic communities on global value chain, won the Thailand Prime Minister Award 2021 for the best halal export products.”

Women’s Business Council of Brunei Darussalam (WBC) President Datin Paduka Hajah Rokiah binti Haji Zakiah was the guest of honour.

Pengiran Haji Yura Kesetria bin Pengiran Setia Negara Pengiran Dr Haji Mohd Yusuf and Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB) Ra’es Dr Haji Adanan bin Haji Basar also attended.

The ceremony witnessed the signing of Strategic Alliances Agreement between Majubina Enterprise with local and foreign parties. Representing Majubina Enterprise was Ramli bin Begawan Pehin Khatib Dato Paduka Haji Zainuddin.

The first signing was between Majubina Enterprise with Ikatan Pengusaha Muslimah Indonesia Brunei represented by Yugo Dewiratih and Corlido Group Brunei represented by Siti Nazurah binti Haji Lukman Hakim.

Majubina Enterprise will act as the supplier and distributor of Bersuci Syariah Compliant Textiles while Ikatan Pengusaha Muslimah Indonesia Brunei is one of the biggest and fast growing Muslim businesswomen associations in Indonesia. Corlido Group Brunei is a worldwide procurement and supply chain specialist.

The second signing witnessed Majubina Enterprise with Auni Enterprise represented by Dayangku Nurul Afiqah Batrisya and Cerita Fabrikku represented by Nurul Fatini binti Haji Abdul Malik. The third signing was with the Gentleman Stitch represented by Muhammad Hazwan bin Suhaini and Perusahaan Mazroni BKP dan Rakan Rakan represented by Mazroni Ali.

Auni Exclusive is a local Muslimah fashion designer and image consultant while Cerita Fabrikku, Perusahaan Mazroni BKP dan Rakan Rakan and the Gentleman Stitch are fashion and garment-making entrepreneurs, youth graduates from Youth Development Centre (PPB) of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

In the context of Syariah compliance supporting the Fardhu Ain and Fardhu Kifayah responsibilities, the signing parties will be the industry players to provide Syariah compliant uniform for schools and agencies, coveralls for construction workers and oil and gas companies, Prayer veils (telekung), prayer mats and others for local and export markets.

The ceremony also saw the launch of Syariah compliant Bersuci Pyrolusite Countertop Water Filter System.

The filter system is the first in the world to use pyrolusite to replace the use of activated carbon.
